Our Service

“THE BARBER TOO,” 189 HYNDLAND ROAD, GLASGOW, G12 9HT

hairmalecuttingown

Nope, we don’t do shaves, dye or perm your hair.

No scalp massages either.

Nothing sophisticated here. We simply cut your hair and if you ask we’ll shampoo it and maybe put on some gel if that’s what you want.

That’s all.

We offer a service that seems simple enough. If you don’t want to talk to us, we’ll keep quiet. If you want to chat, we can do that too. However, one way or another, our expert staff will quietly be taking into account the texture of your hair, how it grows and what style suits you best. We’re sure you will be happy with the result and will become a regular visitor to our two Glasgow barber shops.

“The Barber” also known as “Front Room Hairdressing” opened in 7 Stuart Street, Milngavie in November 1991 in the “front room” of what was in years gone by “a room and kitchen with outside toilet” of an old tenement.

“The Barber Too” opened in 189 Hyndland Road in Glasgow’s West End in March 2009.

You’ll love the way our barber shops look.

Traditional barbers with a difference.

They are comfortable and peaceful.

No appointments.

Just walk in.

Nothing simpler.

If we’re busy cutting we won’t be long. Just settle into our sofa and read a paper. Or wander about and look at our paintings.

We stock hair products. You can buy if you want to, but you won’t get any sales talk. After all, most men just want a straightforward gents haircut with no frills attached.

P.S. Oops. Almost forgot. We ARE sophisticated after all. We have an ever changing display of original paintings by significant artists. They are all for sale. We’ll tell you more about the artists later.

The Old Razor

WHERE TO FIND US, OUR SERVICE AND PRICE LISTS

The Old Razor is our lucky mascot. By chance, it was dug up in the family garden just as The Barber Too opened. Being hoarders, nothing gets thrown away, which is just as well because the verdigris and the camera make it look great again after all these years.

Journey by Starlight

Eclipse

“Imagination is more important than knowledge”

Albert Einstein

There is a website called “Journey by Starlight” which is said to be a blog for the curious and scientifically perplexed. It is basically about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

“This is the story of a great journey that started with a great thought. One day in 1895 a boy looked into a mirror and wondered what the universe would look like if he could travel on a beam of light. That sixteen year old boy was Albert Einstein and that one thought started him on the road to discover his Theory of Relativity. The great man has been reinvented as Albert 2.0 to come back and blog about a journey through space on a beam of light and explain the science behind everything from atoms, blackholes to global warming. The most recent posting is on this page. If you’ve just joined and want to start at the beginning use the index on the left. If you’re bored try these links below just for fun.”

It incorporates an Alien Contact Calculator which uses something known as “The Drake Equation.” The calculation at the moment shows that there are probably another 25 civilisations in the Galaxy.

Great site.

Bonnie Prince Charlie’s daughter

Barrowfieldd House

BARROWFIELD HOUSE

I once thought Bonnie Prince Charlie might have stayed in my grandmother’s house.

You think I’m crackers, don’t you?

Well it’s almost true.

The above is Barrowfield House.

My grandmother was born and brought up in Barrowfield House in Bridgeton which had been bought by her father probably towards the end of the 19th century. But it must have been Mark 2 Barrowfield House built in the 18th or 19th century to replace this one. Unfortunately it was demolished long ago and I don’t think there’s even a photograph left of it although there is one somewhere of my grandmother and her older brother and her dog (a German Shepherd called Clyde) in the grounds which backed on to the River Clyde.

Anyway, the original Barrowfield House was acquired in the late 17th century by a John Walkinshaw. a supporter of the Jacobite cause and a Stuart envoy to Vienna. He had a daughter, Clementina Walkinshaw who met up with Bonnie Prince Charlie and they had a child Charlotte who was eventually legitimised and given the name The Duchess of Albany. Charlotte nursed him when he died.

Robert Burns, who thought Charlotte should have been crowned Queen of Scotland, wrote a poem about her:

The Bonnie Lass Of Albany

By Robert Burns

My heart is wae, and unco wae,
To think upon the raging sea
That roars between her gardens green,
An’ the bonnie Lass of Albany.

This lovely maid’s of royal blood,
That ruled Albion’s kingdoms three,
But oh, alas! for her bonnie face,
They’ve wrang’d the Lass of Albany.

In the rolling tide of spreading Clyde,
There sits an isle of high degree,
And a town of fame whose princely name,
Should grace the Lass of Albany.

But there’s a youth, a witless youth,
That fills the place where she should be;
We’ll send him o’er his native shore,
And bring our ain sweet Albany.

Alas the day, and woe the day,
A false usurper wan the gree,
Who now commands the towers and lands -
The royal right of Albany.

We’ll daily pray, we’ll nightly pray,
On bended knees most fervently,
That the time may come, with pipe an’ drum,
We’ll welcome hame fair Albany.

The Necropolis

Necropolis

THE GLASGOW NECROPOLIS

I’ve never visited here because it seemed a bit spooky, but my mother has. She tells me it IS a bit spooky and overgrown, but is also a vast and interesting place. She found where my great, great, great, grandfather and grandmother and some of their children are buried, so maybe some day I’ll go and have a look.

FRIENDS OF GLASGOW NECROPOLIS

“We have set up this website to be a focus for developing the public’s interest in this fascinating Victorian garden cemetery adjacent to Glasgow Cathedral. We are always looking for new information to add to the site and if you can contribute to the information We are particularly keen to hear from descendants of the ‘incumbents’ that can provide profiles of those buried here.”

GLASGOW NECROPOLIS – MORE INFO

“Welcome to Glasgow Necropolis – ‘the Great Grey Rock’. It will take you approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to follow the Heritage Trail from the Museum, across the Bridge of Sighs, through the Necropolis grounds, across the Grey Rock and back again.”

Head lice and nits

valentineboys

“Head lice are common in children, but can affect anyone of any age. They are not a sign of dirty hair or poor hygiene. Close ‘hair to hair’ contact is usually needed to pass lice on. Head lice cannot jump or fly, but walk from one head to another. They soon die when away from hair, and do not live in clothes, bedding, etc. Most head lice infections are caught from family or close friends who are not aware that they have head lice.”

Contact dermatitis

boypullinghair

“Successful contact dermatitis treatment consists primarily of identifying what’s causing the inflammation. Then, if you can avoid the offending agent, the rash usually resolves in two to four weeks. Self-care measures, such as wet compresses and anti-itch creams, can help soothe your skin and reduce inflammation.”
