This view is the entrance to the old harbour, which is said to be built by the romans. To this day, the main blocks of stone are kept in place by wooden wedges. The new harbour was built to the east of this picture (looking the other way). It is a lot larger than the old harbour, which keeps filling up with sand. My father, at approx’ 1925, had a job with other locals, digging out the lovely clean sand deposits. This was transferred to the ” Links ” beach. My grand-parents lived in 11 Low Street, which is the last house before the harbour wall. Granda Ferguson had a small yawl called ” Obique ” and used to say to visitors to the harbour, it meant” here , there and everywhere “. He also fish with the Salmon Bouffer. The tales and stories I could tell, as passed on by my parents, could keep me writing for years. Visit Portsoy and fill your lungs with the smell of salt air & seaweed.
I hope all who read this, DO.
God Bless.
